The Dumingag Tilapia Producers Association in Zamboanga Del Sur recently received equipment worth ?503,336.00 from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region IX for product quality enhancement, improved production processes, increased income, and employment generation.

Funded through the agency’s Grants-In-Aid (GIA) program, the farmers received a fish dryer, a sorting and fillet table, a hammer mill, feed mixer, and pelletizer, that allow the group the daily output of 20 kilos of dried fish and 300 kilos of feeds.

The group has already been scheduled to meet with the area’s Local Government Unit (LGU) and the Municipal Agriculturist Office (MAO) to discuss equipment usage and to finalize plans on the production of Tilanggit, in time for an approaching harvest cycle.

Tilanggit, a contraction of TilapiangDinanggit, is a preparation of Tilapia that involves butterflying the fish, and preserving it by means of drying, similar to how Rabbitfish (Danggit) is prepared, albeit meatier.
