The Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC), established in Region I under the Department of Science and Technology Region Field Office No. I (DOST-I) and in partnership with the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC), conducted a 1-day consultancy assessment service to two (2) firms in La Union on 24 March 2022.
The assessors were Dr. Victorio C. Palabay, Dean of the College of Technology (COT), DMMMSU-MLUC, Jessie D. Panganiban, Instructor I of COT, DMMMSU-MLUC, and Dir. Jonathan M. Viernes, Officer-In-Charge in Field Operations, DOST-I.
The team inspected included Rabon Seaside Gracilaria Seaweeds Association (RSGSA) in Barangay Rabon, Rosario, La Union that is currently engaged in the processing of chips and noodles with seaweeds as their main raw material. The other firm that was assessed was the Inabaan Norte Agricultural Multi-Purpose Cooperative (INMPC) in Barangay Inabaan Norte, Rosario, La Union that is engaged in the processing of salted eggs and tugi chips.
The team of experts assessed the existing equipment of the firms and their existing process to enable them to recommend technical solutions that will lead to increase in productivity and to recommend metals and engineering related technologies that could shorten production time, thereby reducing operational costs.
The MEIC consultancy aims to assess and collect data to use better and new technologies that serves mostly micro, small and medium enterprises in the provinces.
The MEIC is also working closely with the Metals Industry Research and Development Center of the DOST (DOST-MIRDC) to bring down local technologies in the regions and improve the competitiveness of local businesses. (By: Ruzzel Marvin A. Abuan,DOST-I)
