In a virtual forum-webinar titled, “Intro to FabLab: Demo on Basic 3D Modeling”, the Department of Science and Technology Region V’s (DOST-V) Provincial S&T Center Camarines Sur and the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology (BISCAST) Manufacturing and Fabrication Laboratory (ManFabLab) jointly pushed for the adoption of 3D modeling technology.

It was conducted to impart knowledge on the basic concepts of 3D modeling and 3D printing as well as to re-orient the public on fabrication laboratories that will be very beneficial to manufacturing industries and local entrepreneurs in the region.

Ron Christian Cagula, BISCAST FabLab Manager and forum’s resource speaker described that FabLab or digital fabrication laboratory “is a place to play, create, mentor and invent; a place for learning and innovation”. Like all other FabLabs across the country and the world, the BISCAST ManFabLab provides access to the environment, the skills, the materials and the advanced technology to allow anyone, anywhere to make the almost anything.

Furthermore, it intends to be the leading center for ideas, innovation and invention in Naga City, Camarines Sur. Complementing the already competitive skills and competence of manpower and industries in the city, the ManFabLab also reaches out to assistance micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and researchers from the nearby academic institutions.

There were 102 individuals who participated in the online activity, who came from different schools, universities, and colleges both local and abroad, and representatives from local enterprises. The discussion highlighted tutorials on softwares that can be used for 3D modeling and designing such as SketchUp and Ultimaker Cura. The different services offered by the ManFabLab include 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving, digital embroidery and computer numerical control (CNC) milling.

The BISCAST ManFabLab serves as an incubation zone or hub for creative ideas of MSMEs and other industry collaborators in the region and operates to create economic opportunities and industry growth and expansion. (PNFelizmenio/ JCBarrameda, PSTC-Camarines Sur)
