With the possibility of experiencing a strong earthquake like the so-called Big One, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office I (DOST-I) takes no chances and actively participated in the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill held on 10 June 2021.
The pressing of the button that signaled the “Duck, Cover and Hold” exercise prompted the participants from the different units and provincial offices, altogether to respond quickly and remained alert during the earthquake simulation.

In line with this activity, the DOST-I also hosted a webinar entitled “Shake It Off: Be prepared in times of Earthquakes” through Microsoft Teams and Facebook Live, to further strengthen the disaster preparedness campaign of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management team. Different speakers from the DOST-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), the Occupational Safety and Health Center- Department of Labor and Employment (OSHC-DOLE), and the Bureau of Fire Protection- La Union (BFP-LU) imparted their knowledge and skills towards resilience in times of earthquakes.
DOST- PHIVOLCS discussed the topic on earthquakes and on how the different infrastructures can avoid the massive damage or disaster.
As for the workplace set up, Engr. Lawrence Blas of OSHC-DOLE emphasized the importance of the safety procedures at work and how employees can secure themselves during emergency situations.
Considering fire as the second hazard due to earthquake, Fire Inspector Anne Ramirez-Paltao of the BFP-LU reiterated the ways on how to avoid, prevent, and deal with flames and fires.
