The Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) established in Region I, located at the College of Technology (COT), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC), is currently assisting a total of three (3) on-the-job trainees who are taking Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology Major in Mechanical Technology, a big step towards creating a career in the said field.

The students are required to complete at least 700 hours of on-the-job training as a prerequisite for graduation. The OJT training program started on January 2023 and will end in May 2023.

Dr. Victorio C. Palabay, Dean, College of Technology and DMMMSU-MEIC Program Leader approved and accepted the trainees who were assessed to be highly competent. Deam Palabay has high hopes for the student-trainees that they will learn a lot about the basics of metal works and fabrication to help the needs of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.

The OJTs were also assisted by Edrussell S. Castillo, MEIC Project Staff of the DOST, and Diego Panganiban, DMMMSU-MEIC project personnel for fabrication. The students were oriented initially on the operation of the MEIC and its existing equipment, machines and tools that are used for fabrication.

The MEIC is a special facility established through the efforts of the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) of the DOST to provide on-site learning opportunities for students interested in metals and engineering and expose them to real work environment.

This is the second year that students of DMMMSU-MLUC took on their on-the-job training in the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center where MEIC served as their laboratory where students learn new knowledge and eventually encourage them to apply their skills as preparation for rewarding career in manufacturing after graduation.

DMMMSU-MEIC Region further aims to become a practical training ground for students who want to develop their skills and perfect their craft in metals and engineering that can be applied in their careers or businesses later on. (30)
